Well I finally completed my move to a new river up here in Manitoba and the fishing season opened on Saturday. Needless to say my wife saw little of me over the last 3 days. Most of my fishing was done with a 3 wt fly rod and a little 5 foot UL spinning rod. Ended up catching some pike, walleye, mooneye, channel cats, crappie, carp and drum.

The surprise of the day was a carp on my UL spinning rod that almost had me spooled before I started chasing it down the bank. Just over 30".

Now this $5.95 "final sale" UL rod has notched up a 34" channel cat and a 30" carp. I haven't even told my $500 fly rods about this.

It's probably better that your $500 fly rods don't know. Otherwise, it may end up costing you at least $5,000 in psychotherapist fees to deal with their depression, envy issues, etc...

Congratulations on the new place. Looks like you're off to a good start.

I can only imagine how much fun to that carp was. What test tippet/line were you using?

I was using 4 lb line on the spinning reel. I was really fortunate to have a clear path to run along since the fish was really smoking along. I've caught a number of carp over 30" on my 8 wt fly rod but had forgotten how hard that first run is.
