I tried something this week on a pond with lots of panfish and some bass.
I took an ultralight spinning rig, tied a 1/4 oz krocodyle spoon on as a weight, and a trailer about 18" long with a streamer fly--small--#12 or so--and cast it out to the breaks. The spoon made it cast far, and "swam" so that the fly stayed up off the bottom away from the weeds.
Caught a black crappie--my first. Couldn't figure it out until later.
They were so far out. The next day I took my big 7 weightish bamboo rod and fly cast to almost but not quite as far, and caught nothing. Until you figure them out, the panfish can be finicky! I'm new to them this year. They were easy a month ago, not now.
