I tried something this week on a pond with lots of panfish and some bass.

I took an ultralight spinning rig, tied a 1/4 oz krocodyle spoon on as a weight, and a trailer about 18" long with a streamer fly--small--#12 or so--and cast it out to the breaks. The spoon made it cast far, and "swam" so that the fly stayed up off the bottom away from the weeds.

Caught a black crappie--my first. Couldn't figure it out until later.

They were so far out. The next day I took my big 7 weightish bamboo rod and fly cast to almost but not quite as far, and caught nothing. Until you figure them out, the panfish can be finicky! I'm new to them this year. They were easy a month ago, not now.

Another method is to use a casting bubble in place of the spoon. It's a clear plastic bobber that you can fill with water to add weight. It allows spin casters to fish all sorts of flies and uber light lures and still get good distance. Here's an article I Googled.

My preference is the Rainbow Plastics Adjust-A-Bubble version since you can easily adjust the distance between the fly and bubble.

I have used those casting bubbles (a long time ago) but never did like them very much. Here is something else that I have used with some success.

It involves putting a very small barrel swivel onto the line, then putting some 18 to 24 inches of tippet material on the barrel swivel, with a snap swivel tied onto the end. Leaving a 6 inch long tag in the tippet that is tied onto the barrel swivel makes for a dropper onto which a soft-hackle wet, a winged wet fly, or a nymph is then tied. For me, a good old spinner, like a size 0 or 00 Mepps, goes on the snap swivel.

There is a series of 3 YouTube videos that show some interesting ways to fish flies with a spinning rod. Worth watching!

Joe Robinson's book "Piscatorial Absurdities, The Fly Fisherman's Guide to Radical Ultralight Spin Fishing" has some great info and ideas on spin fishing with flies. Quite simple, and very effective. Tight lines!

I cut hundreds and hundreds of fish using the clear plastic bubble with dries, nymphs and streamers for years before I ever picked up a flyrod
