Each year a friend and I go to central Maine the first week in June for some smallmouth bass fishing. This year I don't think we caught quite as many but the average size seemed to be a bit bigger. Lots of fun on a light rod! The rod shown is designed for trout in tiny overgrown streams, and at just 3'9" is a bit short for fishing a large lake from a boat, but I just had to try it.

Most of the time I fished with small jig heads ( 1/40 oz to 1/13 oz) with plastic trailers. And most of the time with spinning rods, but I needed more practice with the ultralight baitcaster (4# line, 1/13 oz jig head)

I got a chance to try my new extra extra ultralight spinning rod, which is rated for lures down to 1/70 ounce. Even a small sunfish puts a nice bend in the rod but it can handle modest bass as well.

And of course, I just had to take a tenkara rod!

It was a very nice trip, but all good things must end.

I've been back at work a week now and I already think I need a vacation!

One more photo to add. The Japanese have a category that we really don't have here: ultralight salt water. There are two rod types, for different fish. One is for Aji (horse mackerel) and the rods are generally referred to as Ajing rods. The other is for Mebaru, which are several species that together would be called rock fish in English (not to be confused with striped bass, which are called rock fish in the Chesapeake). The rods are generally referred to as Mebaru rods.

Ajing rods are very fast and incredibly sensitive, and are rated for very light lines. Mebaru rods are more mid flex and are rated for slightly heavier lines.

The Daiwa Gekkabijin Ajing 71 UL-S (7'1", ultralight, solid tip, rated for 1-3# line, .5 - 4g lures)) clearly transmitted the strike of the fish shown below. I wouldn't say he slammed it, but the bite was not subtle. They really are sensitive rods!

Good report Chris. I really want a JDM spinning rod bad, and I should have been able to buy one from you by now like we discussed before, but I've been bushwhacked by the out of pocket costs with my new health insurance so I'm still short on fun money.

wow! That's some diverse fishing and fishing gear! You are clearly a versatile angler. I can only imagine the fun of hooking those bass on a 3+' rod. Thanks for the report and the great photos.
