I got into UL fishing in the mid-1960's after a sales clerk in a hardware store showed me his personal UL rig; an Alcedo Micron reel on a St. Croix rod.

All of my UL gear is from that era and there were many other reels that I still lust after to this day.

If I completed my dream Vintage UL Reel Collection these would be my top ten choices prior to the smooth skirted-spool types.

Here's my list and I welcome other opinions.

Alcedo Micron
DAM Quick Microlite
Mitchell 308
Mitchell 408
Orvis 50
Penn 716 “Greenie”
Penn 716Z
Shakespeare 2052
Zebco Spinlite 850
Zebco Cardinal 3

The first quality UL spinning reel that I ever had as of about 1965 was a Shakespeare 2052, and it had a very smooth, efficient drag system. A few years later it was replaced with a Mitchell 408, which was a bit lighter and had a higher retrieve ratio, quite an advantage at times. That reel got away from me in 1974, due to several moves and other changes. Then probably in 1978 I got a Mitchell 308, which I no longer hope to part with.

You had three of the best early UL reels which could still be used today.

I have two 308's but never owned a 408 that had the high speed retrieval and pretty blue finish.

I still have my 409 and Orvis 51A. I guess I’ve caught several thousand trout on those two since 1969.

But, they aren’t as slick or light as my Luvias :)

Don’t forget the Cargem Mignon 33…. I currently have a few Alcedo Microns and Orvis 50As (Haven’t counted them lately). Have had in the past (distant past), the Mitchell 408 and 410, DAM Quick Microlite, and Pflueger Supreme (the one that was UL and, I believe, sister reel to the Shakespeare 2052)—It’s pretty rare, but don’t leave it off your list.

All are worthy of a top ten list. I just kept it to ten that I'd start with. There are also multiple UL reels from several manufacturers.

There is also an Eagle Claw that's based on the Shakespeare/Pflueger reel. I'd enjoy fishing with any of them.
