Ignored the chores and headed to the local ditch to try out the rod. It was windy, and the fly I'd chosen was a little too heavy for the line. I switched to the kebari included with the kit, which made things easier, #learningcurve. The line was too short for the area, so I went upstream to where the water is smaller and the fish are a little more eager.

First fish was an 18" gar that flopped off the hook when I got it to the bank. A gator made an appearance, so I went further upstream...

First documented fish!

Switched to a black "Gurgler Kebari", and

White works too

Love the portability, but I've got to figure out how to fish the bigger water with bigger kebari...

So was this your first time using tenkara? You did well.

In my experience, tenkara starts to fall apart if you use to large a fly, particularly to heavy a fly.

One thing that's not traditional but really expands the experience is to include a tenkara floating line setup in your kit. I have the 18' version from Three Rivers Tenkara and it was worth every penny. Great on ponds. Haven't tried it yet on rivers bit its an easy way to present a wet fly or emerger down and across.

I can get away with using a beaded nymph, but when it comes to micky finns and buggers, the casting gets a little ugly. It's doable, but ugly. I find that using a bow and arrow cast really helps with the larger flies. I find that the weight won't matter as much if you're bow and arrow casting it, but if you're doing any rollcasting and tenkara casting, good luck.
