The purists in both Italy and Japan will tell you the two methods are not the same, but the similarities greatly overshadow the differences. Those two, together with the fly fishing that was done throughout Europe before the introduction of the reel are essentially temporal and regional differences in the same fishing style.
I see the rigid definitions as very similar to the followers of Halford telling the followers of Skues "That's not fly fishing."

Nice video.
I for one do my best on the river to scold people for using synthetic materials in their dry flies. I just don't understand why they even think that is fly fishing. Usually the conversation will get animated enough that I'll have to hook my 1/8oz jighead flashabou deceiver to the stripping guide and reel in my sink tip just so all the split shot won't get tangled while I rant.
