I mostly fish out of a canoe and use a Garmin Striker 4. I'd recommend it and would buy it again. It's probably not top of the line anymore but it's cheap, has gps and works very well. Only problem with an aluminum boat is that you'll have to mount the transducer on the hull exterior, but at least you have a square stern.

I replaced my thwart with a 1x4 pine board that has a rod holder, cleat, and 1" RAM mount for the fishfinder. I just shoot the transducer through the hull -- I make a little dam with duct seal and fold it over to hold the transducer in place. I just splash some water into the dam and the signal seems perfectly good.

I’ll second the use of a Garmin. I just bought a Garmin Striker plus 4 to replace an old Humminbird that I used on my float tube, canoe and kayak. Another option would be the Humminbird 140 (I think) for a more temporary type mount. I’ve used it on both a float tube and canoe.
