Jeremy deserves a lot of credit for offering an avenue for UL fly fishing; fantastic site operated by gentlemen. I do appreciate all you've done Jeremy-p-

Yes, Bill Byrd was a great inspiration to me when I first got into sub 2 wt fly fishing. His equipment reviews and encouragement were great.
Jeremy has created and managed a great site and we all owe a good deal of gratitude to this gentleman. Hope everyone is having a Happy Holiday this year.
Paul good to hear from you again.

I believe it was Bill's web site where I first read about UL fly fishing. ( if it is the same web site that I am thinking of ) I didn't find this board until later........This forum has so much great info that I have not been on Byrd's site for over three years. We do owe "J" a lot for what he has done here...........Don in SC

It changed my fishing life.

I ended up downloading copies of all the pertinent information he had up, thanks to a web archive link posted here. The salt stuff and all the product endorsements I left on the shelf. But anything about flies, warm water and methods I grabbed.

Pkrotine do you believe a 3wt or less can conquer all?;) I'm on the verge of selling my 5wt or using it for salt water and selling the larger rod. I've caught a lot of things on my 2wt CT and it's knocked them all over easily. A 1.7kg catfish which hit the main current in a river was brought in quite quickly too, I just need to test it on larger fish.

How about a 2kg Yellow fish in the Vaal? My son in law always wanted to try the thee weight in the rapids. If I were there now I would definately try it. To me that would be the ultimate test for ultra light tackle.

A 1.7kg catfish which hit the main current in a river was brought in quite quickly too, I just need to test it on larger fish. Its an interesting conundrum. Honestly J broke me into the idea that yes 3wt and under can conquer a lot. I have taken some fairly late carp on my 2wt and 3wt rods. Most people don't or won't understand the idea of playing a fish with the rod and reel. They will let a fish use the current to their advantage. I do the opposite and play the fish how I want to, I dictate how it will go. that being said, I don't think we will ever see a tarpon landed on 3wt or under (unless you play playing with some small ones in the backcountry). I guess its all in the eye of the beholder. Big tarpon don't do a lot for me, but I really enjoy smaller more intimate waters. Just my thoughts though.

Carp on limp noodle glass 3wt's? I've done that on numerous occasions.
Carp on a 2wt? No problem.
Carp on a 1wt original Orvis Superfine? Yep, I've done that too.
I've posted pics on here to prove it.

Jeremy I did not know Ed Herbst was an ultra light fan but it would not have registered even if I had heard that. Light weight rods were never in much discussion whilst I was in South Africa except for my son in laws idea of trying for yellows. I thought 7 was the rod until I tried the 5 now even the three is heavy. Guess I have been converted.

Ed is a big fan of UL, he was a guest on a podcast on the old The Fly Fisher site and talked about his UL rods. Koos Eckard posts here in the rod building section. He has built some rods for Ed I believe.
