Im looking for suggestions for ultra light reels that are less than 3 inches in diameter. I'm interested in any reels even imported reels. I have a couple of Ross reels but Im looking for reels in lower price points.

Thanks
Ben

Two reels that would fit your requirements: White River Fly Shop Classic Ultralight from Bass Pro or the Orvis Battenkill I. Both of these reels are under 3" in diameter and are just under $100.

Larry, thanks for your response. If I was looking to spend more what other options are out there. I know about Ross evo, Galvan, and the TFO reel but what others am I missing that fall below the 3 inch diameter?

The Hardy Flyweight is definitely under 3" and I think the Featherweight may come in at 2 7/8". The Featherweight is a very nice reel and is as small as I want to go. I do have a Battenkill I and it is OK on my 2 wt, but I like the B II better.

A 3 Tand TF20 in 1-3 weight comes in right at 3 inches diameter. The new Pflueger Medalist in 3/4 weight is under 3 inch diameter. The new Medalist is a machined reel instead of the old stamped and painted aluminum. Instead of the old style brake shoe drag, it has an adjustable drag identical to the Hardy lightweight series reels. From the outside it looks quite similar to the old classic Medalist but inside it is very different. If you are planning to match this reel up with a fiberglass rod, you don't want to go too light, as a glass rod of a given length is heavier than a graphite rod of the same length. The new Medalist was designed to be paired up with the new Fenwick Fenglass rods. Most of the reels I have mentioned are click and pawl types, as I don't feel that a disk drag is needed for ultralight fishing. Also reels with a disk drag tend to be heavier.

The Lamson Konic 1.5 is slightly over the size you noted at 3.1" but they are very good reels. Mine have handled runs from some decent rainbows and browns up to 24" with no issues.

I have a Redington Drift reel for my TFO Finesse 2 wt. It works fine.

I paired my Echo Carbon 3 wt with an Echo Ion reel and it does the job as well.

Hatch Finatic 1 2.9 inches or 2 3.0 inches, excellent reels with sealed drag, lifetime warranty, and made in the USA. You get what you pay for ....if your lucky.

No longer made but come up fairly often on ebay - two magnesium reels which I think are the same reel with different badges. They are the lightest of the light, good quality, surprising large capacity. 2.3 oz. 2.5" diameter 13/16" spool width. They'll carry up to a 5wt line with backing and if you intend to use them with a 1-3 wt line you can make a cork arbor cover to make them a mid-arbor so you don't need as much backing. They are the Ryobi 255mg and the Forbes magnesium and they're about $80 like new used or NOS. Here's a link to one that sold on the FFR forum recently:

The TFO BVK0 comes in under 3" at 2 7/8" and weighs in at 2.1 ounces. no counterweight, but works well as a large arbor UL clicker -a better reel than Bass pro UL in my opinion.

No longer made, but the TFO #1 reel is under 3" and I think it weighs in at just over 3 oz. It's not a large arbor, but pairs up really well with my TFO 6'9" Finesse 1wt with no worries.

Another shout out here for the Hatch Finatic. Quality through and through.
Just another idea in case you may feel like it. A nice cane rod with a genuine brass reel. These old-timers are usually very small ( have a 1 1/2" size) and can be bought for around the $80-$100 often.
Just sayin"

For the Cortland Reels being offered. They are great reels and the price is great too.

RDP has a 1/2 wt reel for $110.

I have no experience with any of his products, but some here are very happy with his rods. It would seem to follow his reel would be quality.

Couple others to add to the mix are the Redington CT 2/3 & 3/4. The Hardy clones: Heddon 300, Berkley 530

I got the Wychwood River & Stream, and it is sweet. Super tight tolerances, light as can be. Pretty! I sold my Orvis CFO I after getting this, it is that nice.

1.7 ounces & 2.75 inches for the 2/3
2.0 ounces & 3.00 inches for the 4/5

There are several reviews, but this one is cleaver...

Adjustable silent cork drag: I tested it with wf2f and dt and wf1f.

Redington Zero 2/3 is less than 3" and weighs in at 2 3/4 oz. balances my 7' 2wt perfectly.

the pflueger supreme 1834 is a nice machined aluminum reel that weighs 3.2 ounces. I don't think they make it anymore but there's some still out there. Very good reel for a light rod-p-
