I want to check my new '1wt' maxcatch, but I've somehow lost my collection of post-2000 US pennies (we don't use pennies here in Canuckistan any more - none of the predicted economic and moral decay post-penny-deletion, has come to fruition), but it seemed to be that there was a weight conversion chart available somewhere so one could actually apply the method without first collecting change. Is that true? And if not, does anyone know what a post-2000 US penny actually weighs? Thanks in advance. brent

I can't help you with a conversion chart, but I can give you the weights. All U.S. pennies minted since 1982 weigh either 2.5 grams (.088 oz.) or 3.11 grams (>109 oz.). The Lincoln penny weighs 2.5 grams. The Union Shield penny weighs 3.11 grams. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, Larry. Would you happen to know which of those pennies represent the penny from 2000, on? Or the penny that is currently being minted?

All U.S. pennies (1-cent pieces) minted since 1982 weigh either 2.5 grams (0.088 ounces) or 3.11 grams (0.109). The 2.5 grams Lincoln Penny is composed of brass (95% copper, 5% zinc), while the 3.11 grams Union Shield is composed of copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper). jangles

From 2000 to 2008, Lincoln was on the front of the penny, and the Lincoln Monument on the reverse side. In 2009, the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, various scenes of his life were on the back of the coin. All of these were the so called Lincoln penny, weighing 2.5 grams. The Union Shield penny, with Lincoln on the front and the shield on the back, was first minted in 2010 and is the current penny, weighing 3.11 grams.

P.S. - amazing what you can find with Google.
