strummer brought up an aluminum crown reel which can be used for UL rods both older and modern. I have used skeleton framed reels as well as Airex Ablettes paired with modern short offerings.
My question is who has done the same?

Strummer, et al. here are some examples of the older lighter reels of which I spoke Airex Ablettes and transitional to Fuerer Brother which bought the molds and designs. The Ablette 370 is 2 7/8 diameter and weighs 3.3 empty from same era 1960's came the South Bend 1122 clicker reel in red others to follow later

I have these, but am not sure if any fall into that time frame. One does. This my baby. Won it off eBay for ten bucks. Brand new. Came with box and paperwork. I know it's 70s, but I'm sharing anyways. Looking forward to seeing what else you have!

Strummer The Plueger salt trout fits well within the time period, and it is light enough to be used on most modern 3WTs
The 1494 you have is nice. Rarely do they turn up in this condition. About a decade ago, I caught a 1496 in same condition - unused box papers and receipt from hardware store from which it was purchased. I fish mine.
I think yours should be fished as well.

Here's a collection of lightweight stamped metal or aluminum reels. Gayle of Frankfort KY pioneered the used of the light weight stamped reels with typically two crank handles and pillar arbor design. These reels functioned as inexpensive line holders back when silks lines ruled the day. Later Bronson with its background in cage designs based on the Ocean City Model 61 created a line of these too. Many of the were stamped Made in USA and some weren't. Interestingly the Canadians got in this game too The Model SR100, a Gayle Knock off W.A. McElroy of Toronto was stamped in the last specimen's foot front backside W A McElroy below

Les, could you kindly tell me what the spool dimensions are on the South Bend 1122? I have an 1122A that will probably see some use with a 3-weight, but it seems a bit on the large and heavy side.
Strummer, what is that dark-colored reel in the upper right-hand corner of your photo, right above what appears to be a Pflueger Sal-trout?

Pete the 1122 measures 3 1/4" O/S diameter x 1 1/8" O/S spool 2 1/2" diameter 7/8" I/S width. weight 3.9 ounces empty per digital scale.
If you're worried about additional weight added from backing, I tried a method suggested by Tom on the fiberlass site- fill the arbor with craft foam to raise the arbor diameter, after that add some backing plus line. I've done this on a Pflueger 1774 with good results.

I hope I'm not boring y'all but here's a few more made in Japan by Compac Seiko these model 25 clicker reels represent their version of the Medalist 1492 with one single pawl and featuring a red latch spring action cover which swings right to release the spool from the spindle. at 4.2 ounces empty the reel measure a diminutive 3" diameter x 1 1/8" wide spool 2 1/2" diameter x 7/8" Les
