Recently I went to an Orvis warehouse sale and bought 30 various bass and redfish leaders for $.10 ea; that's right $3.00 for the whole thing. My buddy Jeff perused the three leader laden boxes in search of trout leaders with little success. They were mostly heavier test. My thinking is I can always cut them down ans either use a surgeons or blood knot together the sections. After retiring many well used leaders, I have practiced bringing these experience leaders back to life with this method. Often, I little choice as I may not have remembered to bring others to outings and had no choice.
Since I have these and plan to play around with modifying some of these, I would like your opinions.Image

Les I've tied up my own knotted leaders using Maxima for years. I'm slowly gravitating over to furled and Singapore twist leaders as they are less hassle than knotted leaders, and turn over better as well.

Knotted leaders pick up too much gunk IMO.

Really? How not? I use a furled butt with 5x tippet, so, there is no crap being picked up to speak of.

Just don't have any issues picking up crap on the knots. I don't like how most of them turn over though.

Oh no? Why not? I have heard great things about knotted leaders turning over.

I have some Maxima Chameleon knotted leaders which I picked up on eBay some time ago, and I like them. I was wondering if you guys have resorted to cut downs like I'm thinking about doing.

Les, yes in the past before I started tying up my own leaders, I would modify them to suit my needs. Nothing wrong with doing that. They may not always turn over good though.

J,
Yeah, I could see that modifying the leader would change it's turnover characteristics, but for a dime a piece I can afford to experiment on a bunch of these. And if get lucky, I'll get few usable leadersImage
