Hi,
Can anyone help?
I have a vintage Orvis Brook Trout 4# rod fitted with stainless steel rings and I am using a cfo iii reel. The problem I have is that the reel fitting rings are cutting into the reel seat and marking the alloy.
Is there something I can do to stop this?

Stop using the Orvis rings (push them to one end or the other) and start using silicone O rings from Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, etc plumbing department. Buy a variety pack and figure out the size you need (probably 11, 12, or 13), then you can get a pack of that size, which will last years or decades. I use two on each end. They also keep sliding bands from slipping off on rods where you actually use what came on the rod, and can be the only thing you need on rods you build.

The reel feet on vintage CFOs (and Hardy reels) are bare aluminum, btw, so you can file or sand them to fit reel seats better, and clean up digs and scuff marks if desired.
