I've been going back and forth about a reel for my 0 weight, couldn't see spending 280 right now for the Sage reel. So after some long thought I decided on the Orvis BBS 1 which I just picked up at the Orvis store in Scottsdale. I tried to talk them into the old price but no go, even Bass Pro Shop changed their price today. It's a nice reel even for 119.00 and balances out the rod nicely.

Les I don't have a digital scale to weigh it, so I have no idea.

I weighed it on a digital scale when I got it. It was slightly under 2.2 oz.

Yeah, it's actually a few hundredths of an ounce lighter than the BPS Classic Ultralight that I'm using instead, but I really like the way the Ultralight reel looks on the 0 wt, and I was able to sell enough stuff to pay for it. At $89 I used to think it was overpriced, but now that Orvis has cranked their prices up on the BBS 1's, the BPS Ultralight doesn't seem quite so unreasonable. Here are shots of the rod with both reels. I think both look good and will function just fine, but I prefer the style of the Ultralight, plus it's a "clicker".

Jerry, thanks for posting the weight on the Dennison. I too must admit that I like the looks of the BPS reel better, and the lack of a clicker on the Dennison is somehow disturbing to me (yeah it's just a psychological thing), I'm so used to hearing a clicker. I took the Dennison out in the back and cast the Pac Bay a bit and when stripping line off the reel, you don't hear anything, and then I keep looking down at the reel to really make sure line is coming off the reel. Weird aye?

Eh, you'll get accustomed to it! I like how that UL reel from BPS looks.

The Orvis website for Jan. has the BBS reels at regular price and an extra spool free. Sounds like a good deal I have the BBS1 coming. Kinda helps with the price increase, also was at basspro , the classic is now $109. Jake41

Quote: Jake, I love my BBS I, as does Jerry (jdub), by the way, thanks again Jerry! My pleasure Andy! I'm enjoying having a second Lamson Velocity--very smooth--and I have my black BBS I on my Orvis 1 wt where it matches perfectly. It always surprises me how different these reels can feel when comparing them, but still be exceptional reels. The BBS I feels very smooth and well-built, while the Lamson feels smooth in a different way, yet both are great. Someone mentioned the original Orvis large arbors here on the forum recently, and I too, was able to pickup a couple before they changed their manufacturing. Both are very nice reels and blast to use, and at the same time they feel a little different than the BBS. And the BPS Classic reel doesn't feel anything like the BBS I, but it's still very well made and smooth. It's kind of cool actually--I like variety! Jerry

I am the type of person that once I find a line of reels I really like, that is the line of reels I will buy for everything I own. For example, when I get a 3wt and a 1wt, I will use the spare spool I have, and buy another spool for my BBS I, or get a BBS II. For a 4wt (for river carp and high water, meaning long runs), I will get a BBS III. I truly love how this reel feels.
