In previous discussions we have looked at tippet sizes and breaking strengths as well as line lengths and weights for UL reels. This a leads to the next question: What size backing do you use and why? One of my wife's reels, an Orvis battenkill is spooled with 12 pound backing and 4WF line to get maximum capacity. On other reels I spool in 30 pound and use a shorter 10 meter line. What are your thoughts?

14, 20, 30, even have some 40 on a reel because the length I had fit perfectly.

I guess one could use a piece of a cork to enlarge the reel's arbor to achieve the same results- to reduce line coil and minimize the need for a large amount of backing.

I use Mason's line for that. It is thick and about 100 pound test or more. I tie it to the reel and wind on some Masons line, then tie the backing to it.

I am pretty much a 20# guy...if I need some more backing on the reel, I can shorten the line a bit...

Whatever I happen to have on hand. I try to save any backing from used reels that I purchase if is still in good shape. I also save the leftovers from spools I use to fill up a reel. I usually buy 20Lb. (I think maybe I've been hanging around Pearow too much ) Doug
