About two weeks ago, I picked up a "new" rod from E-Bay. Richard (flyfishforgoldentrout) introduced the topic for this rod over on the Fiberglass forum. It is a Horrocks-Ibbotson Model 1200 Queen Elizabeth. The rod is 6' 9" and is a true 3 weight. Until I had seen one of these rods, I didn't know anybody made a fiberglass rod this light back in the early '50's. I finally got the chance to try it out today. I would have at least done some lawn casting before now, but we just got over a storm that left us covered with 3-4 inches of sleet. With a Sage 3 wt. DT or a SA Mastery 3 wt. WF, I had no difficulty with 50 ft. casts. Handled dry flies very well, but the 3 wt. line just wouldn't carry a mid sized Wooly Bugger too well. Unfortunately, the few strikes I had today seemed to be from trout with astigmatism. They would slash at my BWO and just push it aside, so I never had a chance to find out how it felt with a fish on. I also tried a 4 wt. line, but really preferred the 3 wt. However, we were fishing open water today. On a small stream, I might go up to a 5 wt.

Larry,
I would love to handle that rod. Are you still planning on attending the Spring Glassic?

You bet, Les. Vacation days are marked off on the calendar at work.

Canoe - I don't know that taper but not all three weight rods will handle a heavier fly. I was casting a 3 weight rod today and it really didn't like a mid-sized beadhead. You can try shortening the leader. A true dry fly taper is designed to toss a dry fly, and that's it. There is not supposed to be any energy left at the end of the cast. Such tapers are to be cherished within their range. Don

Andy,
Make it down to the Spring 'Glassic at the end of March, and you can try it out.

I don't know. I will probably be out of work again in a week or two temporarily.
