The Tenkara Bum website operated by a fellow named Christopher Stewart generally has enjoyable to read posts that are clever and well written. The latest post subject was about the pin fly. Yes, super high quality fishing hooks are available in no telling how many assorted shapes and sizes, but it got me to wondering if catching a fish on a fly that I have tied is sweet, how much sweeter would the experience be if even the hook had been fashioned at the bench?

John Betts, a pioneer in the use of synthetic materials in fly tying, went a few steps beyond fashioning his own hooks. If you ever get a chance, you need to read his book on building your own wood fly rods. The original book was written by hand in fine calligraphy and he did all his own illustrations. He described how he worked out solutions for any problems he encountered along the way in building these rods. The book was later republished by Frank Amato Publications. He also built up his own fly lines and built his own reels. With a fully assembled outfit, he could honestly say that he had personally built everything he was using.
