Checked the wave forecast yesterday and it was very good for today. Woke up to very cloudy skies. If bonefish are tough to spot with the sun out, they are 10 times more difficult on a cloudy day.
Went there anyway. After some time I decided to target a group of mullets with some trout flies I have been tying.
All of the sudden I see a big shadow 40 feet from me. Hundreds of mullets and about 50 bonefish feeding under them. Changed rods from the 1wt to the 3wt casted 3 times and boom... time to run!
This bastard made me run behind it through the flat. Got me into the backing in seconds and had no intention of turning around. It stopped and I was able to get a few feet of the fly line back into the reel. Then it decided to run towards the open ocean... Made me get to my chest in the water. (They need to be chased in order to try your best to keep the tippet away from the coral.) Pulled the rod to my left to maximize the pressure (in the opposing direction of which the fish was swimming) and with hesitation it decided to change directions and I was able to land it.
It was a very exciting morning before work today.
