''Tis better to have loved and lost..."

Horse hockey. But, that's my opinion on a topic best suited for another forum. Sometimes the glass isn't half full, it's half empty because somebody knocked it over.

I didn't start the day in a cynical mood. On the way to the bluegill pond, even the traffic is tolerable. Somewhat.

It started like this

That got the attention of this little guy.

It came after the next bass I hooked. Fortunately, for all of us, the fish threw the hook. I moved to the next pond. There, I lost the next three bass I hooked. I tied on a new fly and walked to the next pond. Lost a bass. I walked across the street to a tiny puddle and lost a tilapia. And the next pond resulted in a bass snatched up by weeds.

The final pond yielded nothing. I turned around and started to walk to the car. A scrub jay landed in front of me. I've been down here 17 years and have never seen one. Until today!

That 1 for 6 frustration disappeared. I mean how can you complain about being stuck outside on a day like this?

Johnny Cash was singing about a Tennessee Flat Top Box. I'm pretty sure he'd agree Tennyson is full of malarkey. Loved and lost, hooked and lost. It's all relative. Its a pain in the behind, but, it's the reason why we keep coming back.

Very nice report and photos. I watched a video with two guys fishing a ditch and while catching three different alligators showed up one at a time when they heard the fish jumping and fighting.

Looking at it from our point of view, it's better to have fished, hooked and lost the fish then to not have fished at all.
