It’s been awhile since I have posted here. This report is from September 10th. This COVID 19 outbreak has kept me around here. While I am Covid free being a cancer survivor I do not want to take any chances with this. Anyway, getting off my soapbox I’ll get back to fishing. I had ordered some pine squirrel mini zonker strips. I tied some mini zonkers on a size 8 hooks and really liked the way they looked. I kept thinking to myself this should be a good bluegill fly. So I went to a retention pond to try it out. It was kind of a raw day with clouds and a cold northeast wind. Still I decided to go with my Cabelas Vector 7’6” 2 wt. I paired it up with a Scientific Anglers MPX weight forward line. While I thought it would be a good bluegill fly this was the first fish. I Followed by this guy; And they just kept coming. Eventually the bluegills began to show up. Then the little bass got really greedy. This little retention pond is a real gem. Considering the lousy weather fishing wasn’t bad and it looks like mini pine squirrel zonkers are going to to be worth using in the future. They have a very leech like motion in the water. I just didn’t realize their bass appeal.

I really enjoyed that report. What a great resource, and likely you had the whole thing to yourself, right? I'll bet those bass were quite a surprise! Do you have any idea how sunfish and bass got into the retention pond? Or is it just one of those miracles that no one questions? brent

This pond is not heavily fished but it is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegills, channel catfish, and grass carp by the village. Some local bucket biologists have put crappies in the pond. They are fairly elusive but they do show up from time to time. The pond has a few regulars that fish it and we all abide by the unwritten rule of catch and release. This pond has some very big bluegills in it. The village has now mandated catch and release fishing. Retention ponds can provide some very good fishing. Google Earth has been a Godsend.

Great outing!
Care to share the recipe for the fly? (I figured out the pine squirrel part. What did you use for the body?)

Ummmm, did you wear a bullet proof vest while fishing, since it is Chicago?

Retention ponds and farm ponds are about all I fish. Nice post. Thank-you for your report. I’ve been isolated with a compromised immune system wife. Hopefully next next year I’ll be able to fish my favorite puddles.

Sorry to hear about your compromised immune system. Hopefully you’ll be able to get out soon.

COIVID-19 and compromised immune system is a good reason to take precautions, I can speak with having just spent 7 weeks off work and two hospital stays.
