I'm building a 4' 11" 2 pce 3wt . I dont have anything to go on as far as guide placement or sizes . I'm thinking a 10mm agate stripping guide down to a #3 and then out with 1/0 s to the tip but what of the spacing ? TIA

Carlinbamboo.com offers a really good downloadable spacing chart. You can also used the same program on his site. Click on "info & essays" to find the guide spacing link.

Does the number of guides and/or placement vary depending upon the rod material? (I apologize in advance if this is an idiotic question - that happens to be my area of specialization)

Doesn't vary as much with the material as it does with the action to obtain a good static deflection of the line.

Well , this project came to a screeching halt today . After being gone fishing and in general having a screwed up trip I find that someone or something broke the tip while I was gone . Of course nobody is admitting it . On to my next project .

A couple of the guides I've hired over the years I'd place as A+1. As long as they helped me catch fish I was happy with them. :lol
