I like single footers mainly because I find them easier to keep clean. That little section of rod between the double foots always gets gunked up and is kinda hard to wipe relative singles.

Singles are (slightly) easier to finish from a rod building perspective, too.

I don't have a dog in this fight but regarding distance, wouldn't you think someone would have made up the same rod with the two types of guides and tested which casts further rather than just speculate?
