Trying to decide between these two blanks: 1.) Rainshadow Unity 6' 6" 2 wt 4 piece 2.) Proof 6' 6" 2 wt 4 piece
I REALY want a 3 wt. medium action (not fast) to cast a double taper line in close and my reading on this forum indicates most all 2 wts. are really 3 wts. Any other suggestions are appreciated. Budget is under 100 but that can stretch some. I considered Fiberglass but I don't want my first fiberglass rod in a long long time to be a budget rod.
My local waters are the small mountain streams in the Los Angeles area with the occasional trip to the Sierra and Trinity Alps High Country Lakes.
For 35 years, my light trout rods have been 2 piece HMG 5 weights at 7.5 and 8.5 feet and lately a 4 piece 8 foot Rainshadow II 5 weight that matches two rods that I built for my kids. I haven't liked this last one but use it because it matches the kids' rods when we back pack. (Maybe it needs a 6 weight line.)
Thanks all, Jeff
edit: I will be putting a Berkley 454 on it because it is so light. I can't find my 1492.

Remind me... isn't the Unity blank the successor to the Forecast?
I have the blue 6'6" 2wt Forecast RX6 in the 4pc, and it makes a nice little 3wt.

Thanks for the offer SWCR but I got a deal on the Unity 6' 6" 2 wt. and the blank arrived yesterday. Pretty blank with very slim ferules. For those of you who also at times fish heavier rods, to you generally put a shorter and slimmer grip on your ultralights? and perhaps even a shorter reel seat?

In terms of aesthetics it seems logical to use a shorter, thinner grip, and some folks most likely do just that. I personally don't, simply because my hands do not get any smaller just because of using a lighter rod. Regarding the reel seats, we should remember that the size of reel seats is pretty much standardized at about 2.5 - 2.75".

Wondering if maybe your metric to std conversion is off a bit? That's a bit short on the reel seats. More like 3.25 to 3.5", maybe a little less.
Also, I don't prefer a thinner grip on a specific rod, but I do like a bit thinner grip on my UL rods. I find that with smaller and shorter rods, I'm not having to grip as strongly because they're lighter and have less leverage on me. More of a finesse hand grip.

Sorry, my mistake. I meant to write that "the size of reel FEET is pretty much standardized at about 2.5 - 2.75 inches". I checked a few reels, measuring in inches. I hate doing metric to standard conversion, too much math.

Here is my budget build: Unity 6” 6” 2 wt. Reel seat is from ksn47 on ebay. Hook and Hackle guide set plus one. Reshaped premise grip found in a box of stuff. Man-O-War varnish. 2.12 oz with 2.7 oz Berkeley 554. I have a Peach DT 3 for it. Trying to figure out posting a pic.

Classtime,
Would love to see your Unity 6’6” 2wt. I have the same blank and haven’t decided on hardware yet!
Thanks!
