I just finished building this rod over the holidays. Since this rod is at the heavy end of the UL spectrum, I posted it here. I can't wait to fish it!!! Doug

Doug, you know I won't complain about anything that's a 3/4, you could have posted the pics here. It's a beautiful build, I love your work. The antler insert is refreshingly different, and I like that.

Doug, did you turn that grip yourself or is it a pre-fab grip? If a pre-fab, what brand is it?
Thanks, J.

I finally decided on a blank last fall and by the time I got it ordered it was deer season here. I wanted to build a rod that I could include something from both of my passions, fly fishing and deer hunting. I bought the antler insert and grip from Bob Farrand over on the rod builders forum and I made the brass ferrule band myself for the tip over butt glass ferrules. Fall is my favorite time of year and this autumn theme rod reminds me of good times with my Dad. This rod has a medium to medium slow action and is as smooth as butter.

Forgot to ask before, but what wrap finish did you use?

The first coat is Flex-Coat light thinned 50% with denatured alcohol, that gives the wraps the translucent look followed by two regular coats of FC light.

really nice looking rod Doug. Thinned 50% how long does it take the FC to set up?

Gene, I usually wait 6-8 hours before putting on the second coat ( un thinned ). I have had to wait overnight due to high humidity sometimes. I have read a lot of good things about Threadmaster but I've got plenty of FC light and it does a nice job with the translucent wraps.

I was hunting for an old thread this morning and came across this one. I had the opportunity to cast this rod when Doug and I fished the Blue River together a couple of weeks ago. This is a very smooth rod! I think Doug said he had a H&H Hi-Floater 3 wt line on it and it felt perfect (was it a DT or WF?). And Doug's pics are great but this rod looks even more impressive in person--he did a really nice job on it.
We fished all day and cast a handful of other rods in the parking area when we were done and Doug's Riffle Glass impressed me as being the smoothest rod of the day (and between the two of us we had some very nice rods strung up).

Doug Good job, the rod came out great! I told you you'd like that blank. IMO, Phil (Kettle Creek) has some of the best blanks on the market for the money.
