I am new to ultralight fly fishing....but its a welcome change from my heavy 8 weights. I spent 9 days in Florida fishing in the surf for whatever would take a fly.....ladyfish,needlefish,pompano and trout. I had a blast but forgot I was not 16 years old anymore. Result: tennis elbow flared up terribly. My local fly shop sent me out with a 3weight BVK after I healed up somewhat to see if that would be easier on my arm. WOW. If I had started with a 3 weight I probably would have never used an 8 to begin with.Needless to say I am the proud owner of my first ultralight. My arm is doing much better ....only one month of severe pain. But I did find out some great treatments for "casters elbow" in the process. I have enjoyed the material in the various posts and will try to contribute a few pics from my next trip to the salt. joe the plumber

Welcome aboard and the world of ultralight flyfishing. I have the same issues needing to accomodate my age so I can keep fishing. I wear a wrist brace too which helps. My next step is to learn to fly cast with either hand and use the other hand on alternate days.

Understand comments on 8 wt. Whenever I pick up my 5 weight, feels like I am picking up a steel pipe.
You'll fit right in with this crowd.

Welcome (from another newbie). Can relate on the joint problems. Glad you discovered UL and the path to healing.

Thanks for the comments . I also wear padded elbow strap while fishing and I have taught myself to cast with both hands. Fortunately when using the 3 # I dont seem to have any issue when casting .......only when I hook up with a fish do I feel that little twinge in my elbow.
