Just a brief introduction. I fly fish New Zealand's Tauranga Harbour flats for over 300 days a year, mainly for yellowtail kingfish, but from June to September each year it is totally ultra light fishing with #1,#2 and #3 outfits for kahawai (Arripis trutta). These fish are a hard fighting species and are well known for there aerial antics. I have been following this forum for several years and I hope that I can offer another perspective on our exciting sport. Cheers

Mr. Mudfish Marquand, welcome to the forum!

I had to use that google thing to find out about the fish species that you mentioned. It looks like those “Australian salmon” or kahawi would be a blast for UL flyfishing, but the yellowtail kingfish do look like they might be a bit much. Have you got any photos of kahawi fishing to show us?

Many thanks for the welcome. Much appreciated. You are right PampasPete, yellowtail kingfish are too much fish for ULF and the lightest outfit I use to fish for them is a #6. Only fish over 75cm (30inches) are allowed to be taken and in my opinion it would be irresponsible to use #3 and below fly outfits on them. Kahawai on the other hand are perfect fish for the ULF challenge. I have some good photos for posting, however I am technology challenged and as such, I will have to get assistance in order to do this. I look forward to sharing information and photos with you as soon as possible. Cheers
