Hi Don  Im a newbie to ultra light , normally use 9' 5# or 6#  but have sometimes felt over gunned even on stocked rainbows and certinally on wild Loch brownies often 10"-12". However i borrowed my Dads Sonik sports 8' 3/4# and used my Greys "G" series and took it too a local stocked fishery, catching the above rainbows approx 3lb each Image I was pleasantly suprised the little rod handled them with no trouble. And i could cast about as far as my 5# so a win win.

Decided to treat myself to the 9' 3# Vision Cult, however my little Greys reels just looked silly on a 9' rod so a good excuse to treat myself to a Snowbe Geo Image well that what i told the wife ! Almost ordered a Vision Cult 8' 2# but as a newbie to ultra light a bit scary see how i get on with the 9' 3# plan to try it on river and out in the float tube on Lochs.

You are in the right place for UL. The general cut-off is a 3 weight and most of fish much lighter. Don

A 1974 Garcia Colonon Spin cast UL...coverted by Don (Zenkoanhead) to a 5'3" 2 piece staggered 3wt.
Tj's used Bear Cub Reel filled with Orvis Hy-Flote Extra 3wff line with a foam arbor and about 25 ft. of backing
A David Gale twisted leader with 4x tippet..

A second favorite:

Kettle Creek 2 piece fiberglass 3/4 weight...Made by our own Jdub,(Jerry), with a slightly modified grip..
Airex 371 with Cortland Sylk 3wf line.
My own twisted leader
A very smooth casting rod with a great fish on feel..

I just have one ultralight fly rod, so it's my favorite by default. I like it a lot, and have it pictured here, with my grandfathers fishing stool, and tackle box. This 3wt was my most used combo this last summer.

Whups, I forgot to add that.

Its a Gremlin Emerald Matrix, and a Colton CRGII.    I absolutely love this reel, Its defiantly a lot more reel than I'll ever need. The furled leader is from a local seller, streamsideleaders. I bought a few earlier this year, and have been fishing them ever since. "Great Guy"

I found that both Company's,  Colton, and StreamSideLeaders are awesome little manufactures to deal with.

I guess I've owned more than my share of rods, but my Hardy Flyweight 6 foot two weight rod w/ Hardy Flyweight reel is pretty nice.

Thanks, it's been a great combo for brookies. Seems to suit my casting style. Jerry

the rods are made by myself  - will have more new models shown later
(still in wondering which color is better to heat our winter anglers: pale yellow or buck horn brown?)
