I've been licensed since 1979, it (like all hobbies) doesn't have to be expensive.

My callsign is KI4MSJ and while in Iraq I was licensed by the Iraqi Government as YI9MSJ. I brought my FT897D and my Buddipole and Buddistik with me and was able to do HF under Iraq rules. I was also a MARS station. I was licensed in 2003 and have a dualband radio in my Jeep. My Base statiom is a PROII. Anyway, hope to catch you on the air. That has been a lot of spot activity lately which tells me that this Summer is going to be awesome.

The lowest class license is the Technician class which give you use of 10 meters 2 meters 1.25 and 70cm. It also gives you 6 meter and some small areas in the HF band for CW. So, what does that mean as far as equipment goes? You can get a used 2 meter radio and either use a power supply or put it in your vehicle. Then you can make a 2 meter antenna for 2m or 2m/70cm if you get a dual band radio. You can also get a hand held radio. But, I would say the cheapest you can go is $14 for license and testing and $100 or less for a used 2m radio.

I have found 2m/440 to be the most popular. I would start with a handheld first. Get with a licensed Ham radio operator before you do or get anything.

A friend of mine is into amateur radio hobby and I must say, it sure is a lot of fun. The only thing that's stopping me from getting into it at the moment is the lack of time, which might change soon.

KD9GGY here. I have my General Class license. It's like fly fishing. You can spend as little, or as much, as you want. My brother is a ham, his house looks like an antenna farm, and he has 10's of thousands of bucks invested in his radios, base and mobile. Me? I have a cheapo Baofeng 2M/70CM and an old Kenwood TS-820S with ALL the accessories I picked up for $400 from the widow of a silent key (she must have been the proverbial "merry widow," because 7 months after her husband's death she was engaged again!). Anyway, back to the Kenwood, it works great, and I've had conversations as far away as Croatia with just a simple antenna. It's built to nearly mil-spec standards, and although older, has a good network of users who can help finding parts and service.

WP4JXD here...
Been licensed since 1991. I'm an Extra Class from the time you needed 20 WPM CW to become an extra. I'm an electronics technician and electrical engineer. The fun part for me was building my own radios.
I exclusively operate QRP CW. Have even placed in the top 10 in a few DX contests. I have been out of the air since I married in 2006. I do keep my license up to date.
Will get a wire up one of these days...

One of the local hams who is turning 101 years old next week is giving me one of his extra TYT-MD380 HT radios. Using the DMR radio mode it allows you to be able to talk over the entire world through linked repeaters. So with just a 5 watt handheld, all you have to do is to be able to hit your local repeater. I cannot afford a HF rig being on SS Income. So this is a poor man's version.
