Andy the lanyard I have has Aquarium air tubing instead of foam for the collar. It's comfortable and it's gonna be way more durable than foam.

I cut my cloth lanyard in half at the very top center and tied one of those neoprene glasses straps on each end. The width is very comfortable, and the springiness helps with the weight, too.
