I use my old electric coffee grinder for mixing dubbing, and most recently, to grind up those silica desiccant packs that come in clothing and electronics packages. Free powdered fly dryer and floatant. Works as well as the Orvis Shake-n-Float.

cool idea!
I have used those taped in the lids altoids tins works well to help dry out flies. BTW I take older used magnetic business cards or menus tape them in face down to creat a magnetic box.

Not entirely sure, but from my research prior to doing this, most silica desiccant beads are considered "food-grade" beads. That doesn't mean they can be eaten, but it means the same desiccant packs can go in boxes with food processors as in boxes with electronics. I guess my original post should have stated that I use the ones labeled as silica, so maybe they're "sorta safe." At the very least, it doesn't leave oil slicks on the water like almost every liquid and gel floatant I've tried. I also spray Watershed on my flies after tying a batch.

Long answer just to say ultimately "I don't know."

This stuff can't really be any different from the floatant powders that you buy in the fly shops, it's probably the same stuff.

I'd have to agree. Powdered silica is powdered silica, whether Loon does the powdering or you do.

I been making my own for sometime and figured the powder absorbs water OFF the fly and any residual powder that is not blown or rubbed off by me is taking off on the fist few casts. I would probably feel different fishing a pretty "Orvis only" trout stream tho.
But my local Bluegill Unlimited chapter endorses the homemade stuff Image..

All funds raised would of course go back to protecting this valuable resource for future generations to enjoy?
Plus the founding National chapter would want their share of all regional funds raised to help their larger causes.
Also be sure to get the proper forms submitted for approval from the national BU org.
