BACON!BACON!!BACON!!! Last night I was experimenting with tying a Bumble Bee type fly, and when it came to the wings, I realized I was out of material. I started scouring my wife's craft stuff for something to use, but to no avail...Then I walked through the kitchen back toward the Man-Cave, and noticed the piece that comes in the bottom of a pack of bacon at the top of the trashcan- It was flexible, had a nice texture, (and was GREASY!) and had a nice frosted appearance on one side. After a good scrubbing, it made a pretty nice set of wings-
Sorry for the crappy photography, but I don't have as good of a set-up as some. Good wings on the cheap. Give it a try! -Bill

With a title such as ' bacon pad wings' I was intrigued ! We don't seem to get that material in the UK for meat packaging, but I have been using something similar- it's a very thin flexible polystyrene type material, electronic goods such as computer printers and flat screens seem to come wrapped in it. I made a wing burner from a couple of computer PCI slot blanks, and tried some caddis patterns, they float ok. I have to wait a few weeks to see if they will fool the fish though ...

I used to build computers for fun, and I think I still have these blanks. I need to check my storage. Nice flies.

Perfect alternative and it's buoyant. I like seeing those uses for throw-away items.

Bit more playing about tonight, these are a couple ( supposed to be ) egg laying caddis. Wings are 3 ply. The outer layers are from the single use plastic gloves that you might see at the diesel pump, or that come with some adhesives. Centre layer is a tape used for reinforcing stitching for sewing. Horns are plastic painbrush bristles curled up. I love turning household crud into bait ! Only a few weeks to go to test them...
