I love click pawl reels: simples, indestructibles and lights.
But as you know they have a great problem: they are noisy.
But years ago a creative italian flyfisherman (Arnaldo Bompensieri) gave me a simple self made solution: a pawl made in teflon.
I tried it and it's more that 25 years that it works on my Hardy Flyweight.
The noise does not disappear totally, but it's A LOT less that before, it's more that acceptable.
The "brake" is a little less that before, but as you know in this kind of reels the only purpose of the brake is stop the spool when you pull out the line, not to brake the fish, and for this purpose is perfect.
I didn't make it personally but I suppose it's pretty simple.

here it is opened with the 2 pawls, on the right the teflon one, the one of the 2 who makes the harder work, on the left one of the 2 originals metal pawl

Here the same with another light

and here a closer point of view

It's about 25 years that I use it and it's not "sharp" as new, but this doesn't take any problem, maybe it's better now that new.

p.s.
the flyweight is not exactly frugal, the modification is frugal. And used on a simple cheap click pawl reel I think it can change it in a good reel for fishing.

Zigo, that's very interesting. Where did the Teflon pawl come from (what what is made from)?
I have a loud Flyweight - it doesn't really bother me but I think it could be quieter.

since my hearing is so bad I love it when I can hear my reels singing. A Teflon pawl is most interesting

It's made in Polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE (the Dupont's PTFE is named Teflon). You can find the material even on ebay, then cut it. Mine is 2mm thick (0.0787401574804 inch).

how and what tools do we need to cut the teflon since it is too small?

That's a great idea- especially for creating a repalcement pawl.

Thanks for the great tip! Some of the the pawls for older reels are hard to come by.

There was an error in this old post: I contacted the old fisherman who made this substitution in my reel. The material is not teflon, but nylon, my error. I think that the result is good with teflon too, what I don't know is if nylon is more easy to cut.
BTW I post again the pics, because are no more visible. To make it must reproduce the original pawl using a nylon sheet of the same thicness of your pawl.
In the last photo it is the one below.
Sorry, some pics are not good focused (low light), but I think that the result is anyway intuitive.

This seems like a good application for a 3D printer, especially if you have some nylon filament. I suspect some of the other filaments would work as well.
I bought one of those Redington zero reels that I never use due to the annoying noise they make. Might be a perfect project while the water is hard.

Good idea!
Please show us the result, if you try it.

I opened the reel and the pawl was already made of plastic. Not sure why plastic is louder than metal but in this case it seems to be so.
But I was able to 3D print a fly reel.

very nice. it's click pawl? how does it weight? about the loudness maybe the material is important about it: in mine is metal, I suppose aluminium, against nylon.

The reel I printed is just a friction type drag, very rudimentary. On the Zero, both the pawl and gear seem to be made out of plastic.
