okay, you know how difficult it is to tie on a size 18 fly when your hands are freezing; I drop several flies trying to do this. So, I developed a cheep solution:
buy some retractable ball point pens from the dollar store; theyre about 25c each; remove the ink tube and replace it with another similar tube(I used an old rod tip) Insert a piece of stiff wire after making a hook in one end; glue the wire in the tube. I wound dental floss on the tube to be a stopper for the spring(glued it with epoxy) Very simple little tool but it'l hold the smallest flies so you can tie them. ( Somebody makes these commercially)edit: I should have also said you can use the existing ink cartlege by taking out the metal point and soaking it for awhile but its kinda messy.

Very cool project.
I like to DIY whenever possible. Perfect hack. Preserves the appearance but totally changes function.

But I have to ask; Do you not carry hemostats/forceps on your vest already?
I pick my fly from the box with the hemo's and voila, it's in a holder.
When fingers are too cold, you can tie a decent clinch knot with the hemo's also.
Helpful for getting that last puff of a streamside smoke, removing hooks, ultimate in lightweight vise and small clamp....
Tons of uses when you think about it.

I always have hemo's and line nippers clipped to my shirt, but I find the hemo's too large and bulky for the smaller flies, plus I have to be extra careful not to smash the fly so, I use this little tool; works for me; probably not for everybody. I generally use either a clinch knot or a little figure 8 knot; both can be tied very easily with the fly in this little gadget; the clinch is much easier than with the hemo's(for me)-p-

I think it is awesome. I use hemostats but I think the pen would be easier to spin in you fingers....as I use a clinch knot too. Thx

A youtube presentation would have been much more helpful.
