Cool. I don't think I would take an X-ACTO knife to a stream though. Just saying....

You wouldn't have to take the blade, just the handle.
I wonder how difficult it would be to hold this improvised "vise" while tying.

That's a neat idea, but I'll tie at home...where the rest of my "stuff" is. I have a hard enough time making decent flies the way it is. :lol

I have a small A- type vise with a loop in the base which goes over your finger, it alo has a screw welded onto the base of the loop so if you wanted to, you could screw it into a log or a picinic table. I will post picture later.

IF you can find one of these for sale, grab it! Best steamside/portable vise I've ever seen.
Can be hand held, or clamped to darn near anything. Tree branch, tail gate, steering wheel, fold down airline table and so on and so forth.Image

Sorry about the omission. Still shakin' off the bourbon.
Good point! I suppose it would make it easier to recognize.
"Travelmaster" "Germany"
Very little info out there. Made sometime in the "90's. Someone told me that Orvis sold them at one point, bit I could never verify that.
Anyone with more info, please chime in.

Could you post a pic where the vise is fully extended? Thanks. It may be really cool to take this to a fly tying get-together.

I'd like to see a picture of it in operational configuration also. :D

That is a cool looking vice.

I used to set up at the stream side on calm days and tie flies during hatch pauses. I think tying at the side of the stream is beautiful. I've been thinking of setting up a traveling tying set up.....you know if I have to drive truck, works construction and be away from home or just to take fishing.

My first vice was a Sunrise (poor man's Thompson). I still have it and it functions great. I must have two dozen bobbins as well as various extra tools, thread....all kinds of stuff. I used to clamp the vice on the edge of a picnic table.

One day, I might afford an HMH vice (always wanted one) and put together a nice set up. I must say, that tying flies in natural light right there at the water, is as close to outdoor art as one can get....I mean almost like the artist who sets up and paints a landscape while everyone else is taking snap shots of it. But, the key is a good solid vice. I could not handle tying on something flimsy.

I put together a traveling kit some years ago Dave. Tied more flies in hotel rooms than I did at home! Those soft tackle boxes that come with the separate plastic boxes is a good start, but those smaller range bags and fly tackle bags can be customized with plastic boxes and work even better. Multi compartment fly boxes double for dubbing, hooks, thread. They make some very small ones too. Ziplocks for feathers. Thompson A with a heavy base goes into a big pocket on the bag. You will need a good light as hotel room lamps never seem to be in the right spot. I also found that the tv was hard to see when tying, but you can put it on a news channel and just listen. Careful with the hooks though. The cleaning crew could get a rude surprise.

I have Barlows in Richardson, one of the last small shops, that carries all the boxes you could ever need.

I like you Don use to travel every week. I would decide what fliy I would tie that week and just take the materials for that fly but I would take all the hook sizes the fly was common in. That way I could keep the stuf to a minimum. My Renzetti Traveler has seen many a hotel desks. It was amazing how many flies you could tie in three or four nights in a hotel :)
