I got a rod in the mail in a PVC tube for protection in shipping, or can be used for a tube for your rod. This was regular PVC and is heavy, you can buy "foam core" PVC that is significantly lighter for shipping. FYI

Weight is a pretty nil issue I've noticed unless you're shipping significant weight. Then it'll cost a lot more. Be thankful you had a seller that shipped a rod as safe as possible...
I recently received a rod shipped in the usps triangular boxes... Smashed in one spot... To no one's surprise the rod was smashed as well... At least I got a refund

There are lighter weight plastic tubes that you can use to make your own tod case for backpacking. US Plastics sells a variety of them. I even have seen hikers use the flimsy tubes that fluorescent lights come in. Too weak for me though.

I've got a handful of my rods whose full time rod tube is a PVC tube since the original was lost for whatever reason when I bought the rods. They're perfect for rods and bomb proof.
