Made up that pattern that brought me 4 browns a couple days ago.



Step 1: size 14 jig hook, a bead and a bit of lead to offset the lift of the cdc







Step 2: base wrap and tie in some Coq the Leon for tail







Step 3: tie in a bit of flash for ribbing and dub some hare's ear dubbing







Step 4: wrap dubbing body and rib with flash about 3 turns





Step 5/6: put in half of a cdc into a clamp and cut off, put it in a dubbing loop and twist











Step 7:push back the cdc with fingers, dub a bit of sparkling olive dubbing for thorax and wrap it around







Step 8: whip finish

And they work fine but if you want high quality ones there are some expensive ones from Marc petitjean

I have tried that but I found it doesn't work super well because it is better when the clamp things run towards each other in a slight angle.

It works otherwise too but not so well when you onmly have a short thing to grab like when you cut off your cdc right at the stem and have to transfer to another clamp.

Cheap, fast, and ugly always worked for me as well. Popsickle sticks, hotmelt glue, and maybe some foam liner to give a better grip on the finer (or fatter) materials. One can make a whole selection of sizes in about an hour…and some even come with magnets already attached.




On chip clips, it’s best to shave-off a bit on contact points to get even pressure on different diameter jaws plates. The ToolShop clamps have pivot pads that set themselves to proper orientation, so just clamp and glue the rig in place. I'm very sloppy with hotmelt glues and quickly slathered some fabric paint on these to keep splinters away, but one could probably do a really nice job on aesthetics if they took the time.
