I love stimulators. This one is an attempt to solve a few problems I have when fishing stimis I've tied myself:

1. Tendency to flop over sideways.
2. Not big enough!

So These are size 8's.

I used:

200R #8
Elk hair Tail
1MM foam Body (I cut into 1/8" strips, and wrap around the shank to make the body)
Red wire rib
Elk Wing
Antron Dubbing head
Medium Rubber legs
Grizzly hackle

I am hoping by omitting hackle on the main portion of the body, the wing and collar will provide the majority of the floatation, with the foam lending some buoyancy as well... but down IN the water... not on top.

My early testing seems to have worked so far.

I kinda screwed up the length of the body /wing placement on this one, and it looks a little goofy... but the process is good, so enjoy:

The Materials - Rubber legs optional (I forgot them for the picture)

Nice Action Ray!!
Dude I have to give you a huge props on that ty man!!
I mean I have been tying flies for a while now, and I always held off on learning to ty stimi's.....until now,
mostly because all of the steps. The first few I ever tyed came out funky so I just bought them, but
for $2.95 a shot I'm always stoked now when I ty up a dozen or so.
So for that I thank you if it wasn't for this step by step I probably wouldn't have ever started tying mine, and now that's just about all I fish....
well the spongebob is a close second:) Thanks man for posting it here, I'm sure it will inspire several more Rayfound Variants!!!!!

I love to fish stimulators, but hate to tie them. I will have to try this. Thanks!

Hi Ray;

Nice step by step!

I always wanted to tie a stimulator but couldn't figure out how from tying steps shown in magazines.

I like your choice in hooks for this pattern too!

Location: Lorain, Ohio but can be found in fishing waters of West by God West Virginia and southern Ohio.
Nice!! and is very good fly to have in your box, I never leave home without. I been tying one very similar for some time but I also wrap a hackle along side of the wire on the foam body. I use these in the winter in black mostly.

Wayne, Stimulators are not difficult flies to tie. They have a LOT of EASY steps. But no part of it is actually a hard/advanced skill. If you can tie an elk-hair caddis, you can tie a stimmie - you just have to have the patience to take it step by step.
