This is my take on the Briminator, I call it the BH (Bead Head)
Briminator. I have tweaked the original just a bit to suit my needs in
Southern California. Thanks to Wayne and others for turning me on to this fly. 5/32 shiny black bead head and #12 2X long hook to start. I don't have good luck with Mustad (especially the signature fly hooks) I had this box for a while and got lucky enough to get all 50 in the same size and shape AND none snapped in or on the vice. Ok now on to feathers. You can go to S-Mart in the craft section and get a bag of craft feathers for $2.00 or go to the fly shop and get a #1 Hungarian Partridge for $$$. S-Mart craft feathers You get different shapes, sizes, and colors and there cheep. Partridge #1 With a hole bird you can tie dozens of the same size and color. I start by putting bead head on the hook and clamping it in the vice. I then choose a feather. This is one from the S-Mart craft bag. I divide the feather into three parts. #1.) I pull the fluff (CDC like fluff) off one side and tie it in as a short bushy tail. #2.) I CUT the fluff from the other side and use it as dubbing. Half a side should dub the hole body. #3.) Grab the tip top of the feather and stroke it back. Put the tip top of the feather against the dubbed body and tie in the feather. Wrap the feather around the hook 3-5 times. Whip Finnish twice and your done. This is a quick easy tie. You really can't mess this fly up, the uglier it is the more fish like it. It's also nice on the wallet. I have Personal best Trout, Blue Gill and Bass on this fly. I do use a heaver rod with this fly, but it's fun to fish the 2wt. every once in a while. FishingHiker

Dave,
Should work well as a midge in some quick water.

Very nice. That fly will work great in the Brazos in swift water or riflles (like Les said).

S-Mart is a reference to Sam Raimi's cult classic movie Army of Darkness (1993). It's a spoof horror movie. The main character Ash works at S-Mart (wal mart) "Think smart, shop S-Mart". If you have never seen Army of Darkness, its very funny. 1950's special effects meets B movie meets three stooges.

I like this one...........I am sure it will work well on the rocky drop-offs I have been fishing since it got so hot ( When I can stand the 105 degree heat index). I have had pretty good luck with the (side_arm_under the shady dock fling) with weighted flies too. Although that throw doesn't really resemble any kind of a / LOOP / Thanks for the great HOW-TO-TIE......Don S. in SC

I simply love that fly. That was my entry in the late great spring "mini streamer" swap..... so long ago when I first joined this site. I used a 14 with a tungsten BH....... and I used marabou. Now thanks to this site, I use the bottom feather for the tail. It works better and is more cost efficient. Perfect color blend also!! I've caught more gills and trout with this fly than any other!!

I am going to have to tie some of these......The only one I had was obtained in a fly swap. I caught several nice fish on it until is was so savagely "ripped" from my tippet by a beast of a fish I never got to see. Just look at this bug and it SHOUTS "fish-strike". Thanks for sharing.........(I will try to remember to post a picture of my efforts)..............Don S. in SC

Dave this is a great fly combining different flies into a more than total winner. I'm tying these up while waiting for our lakes to clear of ice. I'm looking forward to trying it on multiple species. Thanks for the great report.

Thanks guys, I have found this pattern to work on bass, big bluegill and trout.

Well done piece. I agree many of the easiest to tie basic patterns will outfish all others many times. Reminds me of a fishing trip with the wife. She had caught so many gills on the fly she was using that it was down to just a bit of sparkle chenille left on the hook shank and she was still outfishing me. Yes, I am one of those lucky guys whose wife fly fishes and will go with me a a moments notice. We stream fish, and pond fish (mostly from float tubes) and will chase anything that will take a fly.

A lovely buggy looking fly, how can a fish resist? I need to get back to the "less is more" mindset.

Weird - Matzuo's #8 Aberdeens have been breaking off on me lately. Very brittle... purchased at S-Mart, too. I get a lot of feathers at HOBBY LOBBY-Mart, and Ive used Barred Rock hen neck feathers to tie these. Dyed pheasant, too; I've got some green ones that will pop your eyes! Im using 6/0 glass beads, too, and wrapping a little wine cork lead foil at the front end to make them dive. Also ultra cheap. But I get off my wallet for some of those beads. Or not.
Great SxS!
