This is a fly I have been using for years that is a great multi purpose fly. Not quite a woolly bugger it is a quick tie and has worked on gills, smallies, trout and almost any freshwater fish around. It can be stripped in, dead drifted under an indicator, jigged or swung in the current and will take fish consistently.

I used a size 10 Tiemco 900 BL but any hook from a size 6 to 16 will work. On this one I used a heavy bead so I could get a jigging action and get it down in the current quickly. The body is synthetic olive crystal chenille; the tail marabou and the legs are a saddle hackle.

Bead the hook and start your thread working it down to the bend of the hook.

Tie in the marabou tail and trim with a taper so you do not have a lump at the cutoff point. I wet the marabou to make it easier to control.

Before starting your chenille pull out some fibers so you have just the thread to tie in. This also keeps from creating a lump at the butt.

Advance the thread to behind the bead and put a couple half hitches in to lock it down. If you have a rotary vice you can spin the chenille up the shank, then tie off and clip.

Tie in the saddle hackle and make a few turns until you like the look and tie off. Trim the excess and whip finish.

This is a very quick, easy and durable fly that offers many opportunities to fish it in different ways.

Sweet! I'll have to start a few of those. Have you ever used the micro jig heads for them? I have the ones you parted with awhile back, just need to blacken the heads with a sharpie.

Used to make my ice flies like that but found the tail and hackle just extra steps.

Mike, the original fly was on the nickel plated jig head hooks. I had to switch to regular hooks and beads when MA outlawed all lead fishing products. No need to blacken the head as the original ones I tied was on the plated hooks. I just had black beads on my bench so that's what I used. Silver or gold beads work just as well too.

Sounds good, ill tie up a few pink, a few white until I get some olive crystal chenille that I just ordered. Might try Hobby Lobby once it opens up tomorrow.
