Agreed 100% to others it is not important as with a lot of things but this is so much fun, quite from the video. Agreed 100%.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape; because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don’t want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness; because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there; because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant—and not nearly so much fun.67"
Awesome! Rivals Samuel Clemons in writing effectiveness in my opinion. Just thought the quote was worth extracting. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for posting the link to that article. Growing up as a Michigan trout fisherman, Robert Traver was mandatory reading for me, and I read most, if not all, of his books. So forgetting to read the article was not an option. For whoever may be interested, here is another video, this one starring John Voelker himself. As they used to say when introducing Nipsey Russel, “Here come The Judge…” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-HLrrbe27Y

Thanks so much for these links. Very enjoyable article and short video. I have that quote on a plaque in my loft/tying room/gear hiding spot. It was used in one book as a requiem of sorts, and I can think of no better one. What I liked most about the article is that it presents Voelker as a real person that I would like to have met: not an iconic fly tyer, not a particularly stellar fly fisherman, not as a streamside guru, but as a man who loved to fish, loved the fish, loved those he fished with, and loved where he fished. And, as noted, the man could WRITE!! brent

Again for those who may be interested, here we have a couple more videos. The first is an interview with Voelker that starts out slow but then gets more interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5nEwBeflEUThe second one is about a bamboo rod maker, with a lot by John Voelker and a bit by Bob Summers. But a word of warning! This can be extremely dangerous for those who are sensitive to fish porn. Beware of the coaster brook trout! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN46bS1lvzQ
